Heike Veit has visited us many times at The Brass Monkey, in fact every time she is in Ireland she comes to Howth to see us. She follows us on Facebook and Twitter too. This November Heike and her daughter Anna visited us from Überlingen on Lake Constance in Germany.
Heike's love for Irish culture, music and the Irish mentality which she had heard and read about in books and films created a longing to visit Ireland from age 16. It wasn't until much later for her first visit to the emerald isle aged 54.
On Heike's first visit she stayed in Glasnevin. A few friendly suggestions on the best pint, best museums and where to eat lead her to the Brass Monkey in Howth.
After the long cliff walk she found us nestled in Howth harbour with a view of the fishing boats. She tracked down this famous chowder and it was overwhelmingly mouth-watering, delicious and worth the trek to Howth. We serve it in a little black metal pan on a wooden tray with two homemade brown bread and a piece of Irish butter.
Like many of our reviewers and letters we receive, the Brass Monkey seafood chowder is always compared to others. Well we did win Best Chowder in Ireland 2012! Cooked to an old Irish recipe the deluxe seafood chowder is a creamy seafood soup with vegetables, salmon, cod, smoked haddock, mussels, tiger prawns, scallop & crab meat and it is absolutely delicious!
So thank you Heike and Anna for making our day this November. You are welcome any time!

The Brass Monkey, 12 West Pier, Howth, Co Dublin (01) 806 3746
We were delighted to be voted number 1 for calamari in Dublin. Although Howth is no stranger to great seafood and there are plenty of places to eat. The brass Monkey on the West Pier has been serving great seafood, tapas and homemade desserts since 2010.
We love our regulars who visit as often as possible for their favourite dishes such as piri piri crab claws, beer battered fish and chips and Cajun salmon burger to name a few. But the star of the show this week was the calamari. We ran rings around the others and topped the pols from Foursquare for the best calamari in Dublin.
We serve up to 200 guests daily during the summer months and are always delighted to get a nice pat on the back for a job well done. We are open throughout the year from 12pm daily at 12 West Pier.

We were honoured to be invited to visit one of Spain's most famous vineyard's this April. The Emilio Moro vineyard dates back to 1891. Don Emilio Moro of Pesquera de Duero started a viticulture tradition over a century ago and the tradition lives on. The winery is located along the Golden Mile of the Ribera del Duero. They offer vineyard, tapas and wine tasting tours in the increasingly popular enotourism area. Theirs goal is to produce intense and unique wines and they do just that.
John Aungier accompanied by Susan & Dee from The Brass Monkey and Lynn and Nina from Twenty2 who met with the team from Cassidy wines who import the Moro family wines to Ireland. We brought Pierre, our Brass Monkey mascot for the trip. He thoroughly enjoyed posing on the wine barrels.
We had an incredible wine tasting afternoon on site in glorious sunshine at Emilio Moro Bodegas sampling their selection of reds, whites and rose. We shall be stocking their wines from Cassidy Wines in The Brass Monkey and Twenty2 restaurant and hope you enjoy them as much as we did.
Many thanks to Cassidy Wines and the Emilio Moro vineyard for a memorable visit.

There were dramatic scenes here in Howth over the weekend with the Coast Guard closing the East pier for safety reasons. Huge waves were seen sweeping over the pier causing safety issues to walkers and passers by.
The Coast Guard warned: "If you see the spray of the waves reaching on the pier, don’t walk it. Waves can be unpredictable, a lull of ten minutes can be followed by intense waves powerful enough to knock you over and cause injury or wash you off the pier wall."
The Coast Guard added: "We ask the public to call the Coast Guard at 112 or 999 if they see people who are likely to get into difficulty, don’t expect someone else to make the call."

The Grub Spy gang from the Sunday World were out in Howth. The cleverly made their way to The Brass Monkey and had a slap up feast of seafood and the like.

We got a lovely write up by The Culture Trip.com. Howth has for many years evolved as a fantastic food destination for locals and tourists. With it's beautiful walks, boat trips and seal spotting it certainly whets your appetite for great seafood, oysters, beer battered fish & chips and creamy chowder.
We love what we do here at The Brass Monkey. We are very lucky to have such incredible fresh produce on our doorstep such as local smoked salmon from Nicky's Plaice via the West Pier, Doran's seafood and great Irish producers.

Members of the dedicated Garda Immigration Unit were searching trawlers in Howth Harbour recently. Gardai searched a number of fishing trawlers in ports across the country as part of an investigation into the use of unregistered migrant workers. The latest raid was in Howth and followed similar inspections of vessels in Cork, Galway, Kerry, Louth and Donegal.
It is understood the primary focus of the probe was the movement of undocumented workers from countries in Africa and South East Asia. A number of individuals in the fishing industry were questioned by detectives following raids on specific trawlers. Gardai say they received full co-operation from the fishing industry operatives they contacted.
Never a dull moment in Howth.
